Early Seattle was dominated by the logging industry. Because of the easy access to lumber, nearly every building was constructed of wood. Additionally, because the area was at or below sea level, Seattle was a frequent victim of floods, requiring buildings to be built on wooden stilts. The town also used hollowed out scrap logs propped up on wooden braces as sewer and water pipes, contributing to what could be described as a firetrap. In 1889, 25 city blocks were consumed, caused by a fire where a man was heating glue that boiled over onto the gasoline fire that was heating it in a cabinet shop. After this fire, where amazingly no one was killed, they rebuilt Seattle on top of the old. I'm taking a rest here...
Then we walked from Pioneer Square up to Pikes Place Market. I had been there one other time with my mom when I first moved here back in 2001. We ran into a street entertainer with his parrot. One of the tricks that this parrot knew, was how to play dead. This gave my mom the idea to teach her parrot the same trick. congrats mike and julie! WOW, I have never been to the underground seattle. I might need to plan a trip now. Looks so fun. Glad you had a fun time!
